By Kris Scott / 08/12/2025 / Company News
Rising to the role of CEO is not just a career milestone; it’s a calling to lead with vision, to support change and to ignite innovation that will shape the future. Susan Sheffield, who stepped into the role of President and CEO in April 2025, has extensive knowledge and experience.
Before joining GM Financial, Susan worked in corporate and commercial banking for over a decade. Her experience in banking eventually led her to GM Financial’s legacy company, AmeriCredit, in 2001, where she began in the company’s Investor Relations department. Over the next two decades, Susan held several senior leadership roles, including Executive Vice President of Corporate Finance, Treasurer and ultimately, Chief Financial Officer in 2018.
Now, as CEO, she’s ready to lead GM Financial and its team members into the future.
“Growing a company like we have has been incredibly rewarding,” Susan said. “Without the wisdom and expertise of our senior leadership team and the industry-leading talent and work of our team members, none of that growth would be possible.”
Susan’s team-centric leadership approach has been a contributing factor to GM Financial’s sustained success. That same success has resulted in Susan becoming a trusted and nationally recognized figure in the auto finance industry.
Some of Susan’s notable accolades include:
- 100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry — Automotive News (2020 & 2025)
- The 500: Fort Worth’s Most Influential People — Fort Worth Inc. (2025)
- Women in Auto Finance (Inaugural Group) — Auto Fin Journal (2019)
- Top 100 Women in Business — National Women’s Conference (2024)
- 50 Over 50: Investment — Forbes (2025)
“Every recognition or accolade I’ve received has been because of the people and teams I work with. I’m fortunate that GM Financial has some of the most gifted and dedicated people in our industry,” she said.
In line with her predecessor, Dan Berce, Susan's humility and innate care for others continues to set the tone for GM Financial's culture of service and community involvement. Under her leadership, the company will continue to invest in local communities, prioritize employee volunteerism, expand the reach of the company’s financial wellness program and strengthen its long-standing commitment to STEAM education.
Beyond her corporate role, Susan is an Executive Board Member and Treasurer of the Fort Worth Economic Development Partnership, previous Chair of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and a former Board Member of the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
“Community involvement has always been deeply personal to me. It’s about more than just giving back; it’s about showing up, listening and investing in the people and places that shape our future,” Susan said.
“Whether we’re mentoring students, volunteering in our neighborhoods or supporting each other through life’s challenges, I believe these moments of connection are what truly define our culture at GM Financial,” she said.
With more than three decades of experience in the automotive and financial services industries, Susan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role. Her leadership has been instrumental in driving operational efficiency, evolving and improving team member experiences, and guiding GM Financial through times of uncertainty.
Rising to the role of CEO is not just a career milestone; it’s a calling to lead with vision, to support change and to ignite innovation that will shape the future. Susan Sheffield, GM Financial’s President and CEO, is ready to do just that.
