Big Dreams, Will Travel: Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders

For the third consecutive year, GM Financial’s Big Dreams, Will Travel grant program has helped high-achieving students from Fort Worth’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA) turn their college dreams into reality. This year’s trip brought together nine ambitious juniors, each with a unique story and a powerful vision for their communities.

In a fully funded four-day, three-night trip, students visited Barnard College, Boston College, Harvard University, New York University, Princeton University, Swarthmore College, the University of Pennsylvania and Wellesley College.

But Big Dreams, Will Travel is about more than just campus visits; it’s an investment in the next generation of leaders.

Throughout the trip, students connected with faculty, explored academic offerings and learned about the intricacies of college life. This year’s cohort reflected on how their experiences and ambitions will shape them as future leaders. Their goals reflect a deep desire to give back, uplift others and lead by example:

  • Some students aspire to careers in medicine, social work or engineering, inspired by personal experiences and a desire to improve lives in their communities.
  • Others dream of launching businesses or nonprofits that create opportunities for underrepresented groups and promote financial literacy, education and wellness.
  • Many envision themselves as mentors, advocates and changemakers. They’re committed to giving back through philanthropy, public service and community engagement.

“The support we’ve received from GM Financial has empowered our students to dream bigger and ignited a fire within to become changemakers,” said Chris Evans, Executive Director for the YWLA Foundation. “Big Dreams, Will Travel represents a turning point, one where our students begin to see the connection between who they are today and the leaders they’re becoming.”

GM Financial’s engagement with YWLA extends far beyond a single trip. Since 2018, the company has hosted students for college fairs, provided access to developmental trainings and mentorship programs, and even served as the presenting sponsor of YWLA’s Senior Signing Day.

As these young women return from their Big Dreams, Will Travel experience, they carry memories and momentum into the future.

“Programs like Big Dreams, Will Travel are how we help shape the future,” said Lane Borrello, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications. “Their journeys are a powerful reminder that investing in students’ education and aspirations is an investment in the future of our communities.”
