GM vehicle technology: How future predictions became today's reality
By Taylor Provost / 03/05/2026 / Your Car
No need to blast off into the future to experience out-of-this-world technology. GM vehicles are packed with innovations that were once considered science fiction. We once asked our Facebook followers to share predictions for what driving would look like years from now. Since then, many advancements have already transformed the driving experience, leaving us wondering — what’s next? Below, see some of your predictions and how things have transformed since they were made.
Self-parking capability
“In the future, vehicles will be able to park themselves.”
Automatic Parking Assist1 technology, now available in many GM vehicles, like the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Yukon, streamlines the parking process with advanced sensors and precision steering.
When activated, it can help you parallel and perpendicular park at low speeds by automatically steering your vehicle into the detected parking spot. You just have to follow text commands, select gears, and brake or accelerate as needed.
Automatic Crash Response
“I think cars will automatically report accidents.”
Whether it’s a fender bender or a more serious accident, there are few things scarier than your car colliding with another. But you’ll be pleased to know that crash reporting already exists.
OnStar® offers Automatic Crash Response,1 which uses built-in sensors to automatically connect you with an OnStar Advisor when a collision is detected, even if you’re not able to call on your own. Whether it’s contacting emergency services or offering guidance in urgent situations, this safety-enhancing technology ensures you get the help you need when it matters most.
Enhanced safety features
“Cars will be able to stop before hitting things.”
While the technology crafted for all speeds is still in the works, some GM vehicles, including many Chevrolet models, have available Front Pedestrian Braking.1 When you’re driving below 50 mph, the system can alert you of a collision detection with a pedestrian ahead.
It may also help to reduce the severity of a collision or avoid it altogether by automatically activating hard emergency braking if the driver hasn’t already. If the driver has, it can enhance driver-initiated hard braking.
Also, driver assistance tools available in certain GM vehicles, like Adaptive Cruise Control,1 help maintain a safe distance between you and drivers in front of you to make your drive smoother and more secure.
These features are designed to keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians safer, proving the future of safety-focused driving is already here.
Super Cruise™: Hands-free driving redefined
“What will they come up with next?”
From electric vehicles (EVs) offering extended ranges and fast-charging capabilities to hands-free driving systems like Super Cruise,2 GM vehicles are shaping the road ahead.
Super Cruise supports hands-free driving on compatible roads using advanced mapping technologies and driver attention monitoring. This GM innovation takes automation to the next level, enabling safer and more relaxed long-distance travel.
Ready to experience the future?
While flying cars are still a dream, GM continues to usher in a future of advanced technologies that deliver convenience and peace of mind. Apply to prequalify, then view current offers and explore advanced features available in the latest GM vehicles.
1 Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver's responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner's Manual for more important feature limitations and information.
2Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device. Requires an active service plan or trial.
